AU
5 January 1834 - 30 June 1861
William John Wills was an English-born Australian surveyor and co-leader of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition of 1860–1861. Tasked with charting an overland route from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria, Wills made meticulous scientific observations during the journey. Despite reaching the north, he perished on the return trip, a symbol of the hardships of inland exploration.
