Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, was a Norse explorer who around the year 1000 became the first known European to set foot in North America, at a site he called Vinland, likely located in Newfoundland. His journey, recorded in Icelandic sagas, predated Columbus by nearly 500 years. He is celebrated for his pioneering voyage across the Atlantic and is considered a hero in Nordic history.
