M Himilco the Navigator
TN
Around -450
Himilco was a Carthaginian sailor and contemporary of Hanno who sailed northward in the 5th century BCE, possibly reaching the British Isles and even the Sargasso Sea. Although his records are lost, Roman authors mention his encounters with dangerous fogs and seaweeds. His voyages demonstrate the extent of Phoenician maritime ambition and are among the first recorded attempts to explore the Atlantic beyond the Mediterranean.
