Charles Darwin was a British naturalist and geologist who joined HMS Beagle as a young man on its 1831–1836 expedition around the globe. His observations in South America and the Galápagos Islands laid the foundation for his theory of evolution by natural selection, published in 'On the Origin of Species' in 1859. His work transformed biology and modern science.
