Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to round the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, proving that the Atlantic and Indian Oceans were connected. His voyage was crucial to later missions, including Vasco da Gama's journey to India. Dias died in 1500 in a storm off the same cape he had famously rounded over a decade earlier.
