Christopher Columbus was a Genoese explorer sailing for Spain who completed four voyages across the Atlantic between 1492 and 1504. Though he believed he had found a westward route to Asia, he instead encountered the Caribbean and parts of Central and South America, initiating lasting contact between Europe and the New World.
