Hanno the Navigator was a Carthaginian explorer of the 5th century BCE, famous for his voyage along the West African coast. His expedition, described in the 'Periplus of Hanno', aimed to found new colonies and explore territories beyond the Pillars of Hercules. He reportedly reached as far as modern-day Sierra Leone or beyond, documenting volcanos and exotic animals like gorillas. His journey is one of the earliest recorded maritime explorations in history.
