Roald Amundsen was a legendary Norwegian polar explorer who was the first to navigate the Northwest Passage and the first to reach the South Pole in 1911. Known for his careful planning and mastery of Arctic survival, he also participated in early Arctic airship flights before mysteriously disappearing during a rescue mission in 1928.
