Prince Henry of Portugal, known as Henry the Navigator, was a central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire. Though he never sailed himself, he sponsored numerous expeditions along the West African coast in the 15th century, paving the way for sea routes to Asia. He established a school of navigation and helped usher in the Age of Discoveries.
