Mike Golding is one of the most accomplished British offshore sailors, widely respected for his resilience and professionalism in solo and crewed ocean racing. Born on August 27, 1960, in London, he began his career as a fireman before turning full-time to sailing.
Golding competed in three Vendée Globe races and achieved his best result in 2004–2005, finishing third. He also made history in 2001 as the first person to sail non-stop around the world in both directions, completing the eastabout and westabout circumnavigations solo.
He is known for his level-headed decision-making and advocacy for safety and seaworthiness in extreme conditions. Golding also played a critical role in rescuing fellow sailor Alex Thomson during the 2006 Velux 5 Oceans race.
Today, he is involved in environmental causes and continues to represent British sailing excellence. His career embodies endurance, competence, and a deep commitment to the values of solo ocean racing.
