Born 2 May 1957 Age 68
Hervé Laurent is a French offshore sailor best known for his two participations in the Vendée Globe and his perseverance in extreme conditions. Born on May 2, 1957, in Lorient, he trained as an engineer before embarking on a professional sailing career in the 1990s.
He gained attention in the 1996–1997 Vendée Globe, where he finished in a commendable fourth place after navigating through intense Southern Ocean storms and technical issues. His tenacity and calm decision-making made him one of the underdog heroes of that edition.
Laurent also raced in the 2000–2001 Vendée Globe but was forced to retire due to damage. Despite not securing podium finishes, he earned admiration for his reliability, preparation, and seamanlike conduct.
He later turned to design and consultancy, staying connected to the world of ocean racing through support roles. Hervé Laurent’s career is a quiet but inspiring example of professionalism, resilience, and dedication to solo sailing.
