Born 16 July 1965 Age 59
Michel Desjoyeaux is a legendary French sailor and a two-time winner of the Vendée Globe, widely considered one of the greatest solo offshore racers in history. Born on July 16, 1965, in Concarneau, France, he earned the nickname “Le Professeur” for his methodical, intelligent approach to racing and boat preparation.
Desjoyeaux first won the Vendée Globe in the 2000–2001 edition, completing the solo, non-stop circumnavigation in record time. He returned in 2008–2009 to claim a second victory, becoming the only sailor in history to win the race twice—an achievement that still stands today. His 2008 win was particularly legendary: after being forced to return to port early in the race due to technical issues, he restarted with a delay of several days and still managed to overtake the entire fleet and finish first.
In addition to his Vendée Globe triumphs, Michel Desjoyeaux has an impressive track record in the Solitaire du Figaro (three victories), the Route du Rhum, and the Transat Jacques Vabre. An engineer by training, he was instrumental in the evolution of IMOCA boat design and is the founder of the renowned Mer Agitée racing team and shipyard.
Beyond his racing career, Desjoyeaux remains an influential voice in the world of ocean racing. He continues to mentor young sailors and contribute to technological innovation in competitive sailing. His legacy is built on a rare combination of performance, intelligence, and humility, inspiring generations of offshore navigators.
