Marc Thiercelin is a seasoned French solo sailor with a rich history in ocean racing and exploration. Born on October 29, 1960, in Saâcy-sur-Marne, he has participated in more than four Vendée Globe editions and completed multiple solo circumnavigations.
Nicknamed “Captain Marck,” Thiercelin is known for his poetic sensibility and for linking adventure with artistic expression. His best Vendée Globe result came in 1996–1997, where he finished second. He has also been a strong performer in the BOC Challenge, Route du Rhum, and Around Alone.
Thiercelin is respected not only for his endurance and navigation skills but also for his storytelling and contributions to maritime culture. He has written books, produced documentaries, and integrated science and education into his expeditions.
