Sir Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer who, together with Tenzing Norgay, became the first confirmed climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. He later participated in Antarctic expeditions and devoted much of his life to humanitarian efforts in Nepal.
